Youth Coaching

Our aim

We aim to provide quality safe secure cycle coaching for young people of all abilities aged from 4-16. As a Sport England Club Mark accredited club, you can be sure we have high standards of welfare, equity, coaching and Club management. All of our coaches have undergone British Cycling coaching courses, as well as First Aid and Safeguarding Children training, and are DBS checked.

Our history

The Youth Section of Stockton Wheelers cycling club began when Colin Leckonby, club president, and Kevin Kilcullen, lead coach, offered cycling coaching at St Gregory’s Roman Catholic primary School in Stockton. The initial eleven children came to regular Saturday morning training sessions beginning in March 2007. Within the space of a year the cycle sessions moved to Our Lady and St Bede’s Secondary School in Stockton primarily as our popularity was such that we needed a bigger area. Thus our youth section found its current format; two sessions each of an hour with a good ratio of qualified club coaches to riders and plenty of young volunteers to help out.

In March 2011 we moved our sessions to our current home at Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit and continue to go from strength to strength. We currently have over 140 youth members.

Where you can find us

The youth section meets every Saturday morning at Middlesbrough Cycling Circuit, Middlesbrough Sports Village, Alan Peacock Way, TS4 3AE. We currently run two sessions. The only Saturdays that the sessions won't be held are at Christmas and Easter, apart from where extreme weather conditions close the circuit, or occasional exceptional circumstances.

Beginners session - 9:45 to 10:45am. This session is designed for children with no or very little riding experience, or those who wish to improve basic skills. We use balance bikes for those who have yet to master riding and often operate a ratio of one coach to two riders, where possible, for the very beginners. Our success rate is high with many of our riders progressing on to the more advanced groups and representing the club in regional and national youth racing competitions. In this session we concentrate on bike handling skills.

We currently have a waiting list for our learn-to-ride group within this session. If you would like your child's name to be added to the list, please contact Michelle Kilcullen on

Racing Skills session - 10:45 to 11:45am for groups B & C, 10.45 to 12.15pm for group A

This session is designed for older children who have mastered the basic skills of cycling and wish to develop their skills further and perhaps develop some racing techniques. Within this session we have 3 groups so that specific individual development of all cycling skills can be taught.

PLEASE NOTE: All riders attending coaching sessions for the first time will need to attend the 9.45am session for assessment, to ensure that they are placed in an appropriate group for their abilities.

Please print and complete this form to bring with you as it will save time on the day, but don’t worry if you don’t have access to a printer as some spare forms will be available at the session.

£3.50 for members and £4.00 for non-members. Membership is optional for the beginners session but for the intermediate (race skills) session riders have to join after 2 taster sessions.
