The country’s diverse landscapes, from rolling countryside to bustling city circuits, provide a perfect backdrop for those eager to test their endurance, skill, and passion on two wheels. For amateurs, joining a road race or taking on a closed-circuit event is an exhilarating way to experience the thrill of competitive cycling without the pressures of the professional leagues. UK racing events for amateurs are plentiful and range from short, closed-circuit criteriums in urban areas to longer, scenic road races that showcase the beauty of the British countryside. For those new to the sport, local amateur circuits are a great starting point. Criteriums, or “crits,” are particularly popular among beginners. These are fast-paced races held on short, closed-loop courses, often in town centers or on dedicated cycling circuits, which creates a dynamic environment for cyclists and spectators alike. Circuit racing demands quick reflexes, smart positioning, and a strong sprint, as racers need to navigate tight corners and jockey for position. Beginners will benefit from the intense but supportive atmosphere, where experienced cyclists are often more than willing to share tips on racing strategy, drafting, and how to handle the competitive dynamics of group cycling. British Cycling Club (BCC) and The London International (TLI) In the UK, two organisations stand out for supporting and promoting amateur and grassroots cycling: British Cycling Club (BCC) and The London International (TLI). Both organisations play a critical role in fostering a passion for cycling, making it accessible, and providing opportunities for both newcomers and seasoned cyclists to participate in organized events, gain experience, and enjoy the camaraderie of the sport. British Cycling Club (BCC) British Cycling Club (BCC) is one of the UK’s most prominent organisations dedicated to advancing cycling at all levels. From beginners to elites, BCC provides a robust structure for road and circuit racing, offering a variety of events and training programs across the country. The BCC is also known for its commitment to cycling safety, education, and skill development, making it an ideal starting point for amateurs looking to enter the world of competitive cycling. BCC members benefit from an array of resources: Organized Races: BCC hosts and sanctions races across the UK, providing a pathway for cyclists to progress through competitive ranks. These events are often age-graded or divided by skill level, ensuring fair competition. Skill Development: From beginner classes to advanced tactics, BCC emphasises technical and strategic skill-building, helping cyclists improve their racing technique, handling, and overall performance. Community Support: BCC brings together cyclists from all backgrounds, creating a supportive community that encourages sharing knowledge, tips, and experiences. For amateur cyclists, joining a BCC-affiliated club is a fantastic way to gain access to regular, structured training and a wealth of race opportunities. Many of these clubs also run weekly training rides, social events, and skills clinics, creating an inclusive environment where riders can build confidence, fitness, and friendships. The London International (TLI) The London International (TLI) caters specifically to amateur and grassroots racers, with a focus on inclusive, accessible, and enjoyable racing experiences. TLI organizes and promotes local and regional cycling events, including road races, criteriums, and closed-circuit events, where cyclists can hone their skills and experience the excitement of competitive racing in a welcoming setting. Key features of TLI: Amateur-Friendly Events: TLI's events are tailored for amateurs, with a low-pressure atmosphere that emphasizes enjoyment and personal growth alongside competition. Flexible Categories: Races are often categorized by age, skill, and experience level, allowing riders of all abilities to find their place in the competition and race against those of a similar level. Community-Centered Races: With a focus on local events, TLI is deeply integrated into the community, and many of its events are held on traffic-free circuits, making them safe and accessible for all participants. TLI also prides itself on fostering a culture of inclusivity, which is reflected in its emphasis on fair play, sportsmanship, and creating a supportive environment. This makes TLI an ideal organisation for cyclists who may feel intimidated by more competitive racing scenes but are still eager to experience the thrill of racing. For anyone new to road or circuit racing, TLI events offer an excellent entry point to build race experience in a relaxed yet competitive setting. Additionally, TLI's close community ties and well-organized events make it a perfect stepping stone for cyclists looking to advance within amateur cycling or eventually transition to larger competitive events through British Cycling or other governing bodies.
- Mel's Ride | Stockton Wheelers CC
An annual ride to support Mel and the work she does with the seeing dogs trust MEL'S RIDE Mel began her tandem journey as a stoker with Stockton Wheelers’ visually impaired tandem sessions at Middlesbrough Sports Village in August 2021. After gaining confidence there, she joined one of the Stockton Wheelers' social rides on local country lanes and enjoyed every moment of it. Following three years of tandem riding, Mel set her sights on a major milestone: completing a 100-mile ride. She chose a route to York and back, and the date was set for April 2024. Mel also decided to turn this ride into a fundraiser for The Seeing Dogs Alliance, setting an initial goal of £1,000. By the end of the event, she had exceeded expectations, raising £1,500. The funds were donated to support the purchase and training of assistance dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired. The ride received tremendous support, with 18 other Stockton Wheelers members joining in, many of whom were tackling their own first 100-mile challenge. The event was a resounding success; everyone enjoyed the experience and made a meaningful impact for a great cause. Following the event's success, the Stockton Wheelers committee has decided to establish an annual 100+ mile challenge ride, inviting all members to participate in this memorable adventure. The route for 2025 is yet to be confirmed, but we look forward to welcoming everyone for another incredible ride! seeing cheque (1) 1000015463 1000015464 seeing cheque (1) 1/5
