Cycle Cross Cyclocross (CX) is a high-energy cycling discipline that blends elements of road racing, mountain biking, and obstacle racing. Held in the cooler months, cyclocross races feature short, intense laps (usually 2-3 km) on mixed-terrain courses that include grass, mud, gravel, and sand. Obstacles like barriers and steep climbs often force riders to dismount and carry their bikes, adding a unique physical challenge. Cyclocross Bikes and Gear Cyclocross bikes are specially designed for rugged courses: Geometry: High bottom brackets and shorter wheelbases for maneuverability. Tires: Wider, treaded tires for grip on loose or muddy surfaces. Brakes: Disc brakes to handle wet and muddy conditions. Other essentials include grippy shoes with cleats, gloves for control, and layered clothing for variable weather. Key Skills Dismounting and Remounting: Seamlessly navigate barriers by quickly hopping on and off the bike. Cornering on Loose Surfaces: Master tight, muddy turns to maintain speed. Terrain Adaptation: Adjust constantly to different surfaces with balance and control. Why Cyclocross? Cyclocross is beloved for its community spirit, high-energy atmosphere, and accessibility for riders and spectators alike. Standard distances include 10, 25, 50, and 100 miles, with events like 12-hour and 24-hour trials as more extreme challenges. Key Aspects of Time Trialling: Types: Solo, team, and hill climb time trials. Courses: Routes range from flat roads to hilly climbs and are often on open roads, requiring awareness of traffic. Equipment: Specialized bikes, road bikes, aero helmets, and form-fitting clothing help reduce drag and increase speed. Governing Bodies: Cycling Time Trials (CTT) oversees most events, setting rules and standards for competitions. Getting Started Riders can find events through local clubs or the CTT website . Beginners are advised to start with shorter distances, invest in basic aerodynamic gear, and focus on pacing to maintain high speeds. • Mel's Ride | Stockton Wheelers CC

An annual ride to support Mel and the work she does with the seeing dogs trust MEL'S RIDE Mel began her tandem journey as a stoker with Stockton Wheelers’ visually impaired tandem sessions at Middlesbrough Sports Village in August 2021. After gaining confidence there, she joined one of the Stockton Wheelers' social rides on local country lanes and enjoyed every moment of it. Following three years of tandem riding, Mel set her sights on a major milestone: completing a 100-mile ride. She chose a route to York and back, and the date was set for April 2024. Mel also decided to turn this ride into a fundraiser for The Seeing Dogs Alliance, setting an initial goal of £1,000. By the end of the event, she had exceeded expectations, raising £1,500. The funds were donated to support the purchase and training of assistance dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired. The ride received tremendous support, with 18 other Stockton Wheelers members joining in, many of whom were tackling their own first 100-mile challenge. The event was a resounding success; everyone enjoyed the experience and made a meaningful impact for a great cause. Following the event's success, the Stockton Wheelers committee has decided to establish an annual 100+ mile challenge ride, inviting all members to participate in this memorable adventure. The route for 2025 is yet to be confirmed, but we look forward to welcoming everyone for another incredible ride! seeing cheque (1) 1000015463 1000015464 seeing cheque (1) 1/5
